Bag-O-Woad
In May of 2002 the Utah-Idaho Cooperative Weed Management Area (UICWMA), which includes Box Elder, Cache, Bannock, Franklin, and Oneida counties of Utah and Idaho, started the Bag O' Woad program.
The Bag O' Woad program is designed to provide the general public a fun, educational, and profitable way for families to learn about and control noxious weeds, specifically dyer's woad. Dyer's woad is highly conspicuous and has soft foliage making it an ideal weed for families to collect.
How It Works
New for 2006. Cache County residents must submit an online application for the opportunity to recieve bags. First come, first served. Applications handled in the order they are received. Applications available at utah-idahocwma.org. Bounty for 2006 will be $8 per bag.
Bag O' Woad General Rules
- Bag O' Woad will be held between the 2nd Saturday of May through the last Friday in May each year.

- When bags are turned in, a reciept will be given and a check will be mailed to the group leader at the end of the program. Please allow three weeks for check to be delivered.
- Checks will be made out to the group leader who applied for the bags. He/she is expected to distribute the bounty payments to youth participants.
Bounty Requirements
- Only youth between ages 3 - 18 are eligible for bounty payments.
- Dyer's Woad must be collected within Cache County Utah.
- Use of official UICWMA bags is required for bounty payments - NO EXCEPTIONS!
- $8 bounty will be paid only for qualifying bags of dyer's woad. A Qualifying bag will be reasonably filled with dyer's woad (35-40 lbs.). No rocks, excessive dirt, non qualifying plants etc.
- Dyer's woad must be dug or hand pulled and have a minimum of 2" of root attached to plant. Random inspections will be made.
After the program is over...

The weed department is left with tons of dyer's woad and many wonder what is done with it all. We simply load it into dump trucks and bury it in the landfill. We are looking at other alternatives to dispose of all this dyer's woad.
